Developing a Research Plan

This session covers how to develop a research topic and prepare to search. It is best done in the classroom for a longer class period so that students have time to participate in writing exercises.

  1. Understanding your assignment: what exactly are you supposed to do?
  2. Identify topic ideas through browsing, freewriting, and mind mapping.
  3. Explore further
    1. Gather background and contextual information
    2. Refine your topic
    3. Identify key words
    4. Create questions
  4. Identify research tools
    1. Types/formats of materials (articles, books, photos, statistics, etc.)
    2. Library databases
    3. Citation style manuals
    4. Saving and storing sources and notes
  5. Develop a project schedule
